Nashihatu Al-Muslimin Book by Syekh Abdush Shamad Palembang

Sheikh Abdush Shamad is a scholar from Palembang who has produced many works of religious books that are spread throughout the archipelago and the world, one of which is Kitab Nashihatu Al-Muslimin. The book consists of excerpts from verses of the Qur'an and hadiths of the Prophet SAW about the merits (priorities) of jihad, the context of which at that time was that the Muslims were obliged to fight against western colonialism.

It was delivered by Young Intellectual NU KH. Ahmad Baso in the series "Inspiration for Sahur 2023" which was shown on the Youtube account of BKN PDI Perjuangan when it was before Sahur with the host Esti on Monday (3/04/2023). 

"These arguments (about jihad) were specifically selected and compiled by Sheikh Abdus Shamad based on the testimony of righteous Salafist scholars, to assert that jihad fi sabilillah became a necessity that must be upheld by Muslims who at that time were under the colonialism of the West," Baso said.

According to Baso, the book written by Sheikh Abdus Shamad contains important affirmations for the Indonesian nation in fighting foreign colonialism or imperialism. At that time, Sheikh Abdush Shamad was very concerned about the condition of the Indonesian nation at that time which was under colonial rule. That then triggered him to write a religious book with the aim of giving a new spirit to the Indonesian nation to fight against the colonialists. 

"Jihad is not synonymous with terrorism. What is meant by jihad in this case is to fight against foreign colonialists who are harming the Indonesian people. The Jihad that is meant in the book Nashihatu Al-Muslimin is to fight foreign colonialists who harm the Indonesian people", said Baso.

Baso, who is also a researcher of Nusantara manuscripts, also added that Syekh Abdush Shamad at that time built good communication with kings and sultanates in the archipelago. It was intended for Muslims to rise up against the invaders. One of the messages from the manuscripts of the Menteng war poetry that existed at that time was that if the leaders and the people were united, then the Indonesian nation would be solid in facing various kinds of challenges.

"Once again, the statement of jihad based on the Nashihatu Al-Muslimin Book is to build national unity and expel invaders. The meaning of jihad after independence is in accordance with the mandate of the 1945 Constitution by eradicating poverty, backwardness, ignorance, prospering the people and raising people's welfare," said Baso.
